Word of the Day: ptarmic - substance causing sneezing - Sheesh! That pepper is really ptarmic, man!
ON A DAY that was supposed to herald in the arrival of the first 8MP camera in Blighty, news comes to The INQUIRER that it has been delayed.
The Samsung I8510 8-megapixel phone was due to come into focus at the Carphone Warehouse on 1 September, beating Sony Ericsson's C905 of a similar ilk by nearly two months. This is despite the latter company being first to announce its handset in June this year, with an 8.1megapixel format.
We were informed the I8510, also known as Innov8 around the world would pitch up in the UK on Orange first and at a later date on O2, all exclusively for the first month with Carphone Warehouse. How this will change those time frames now the in-store date has been pushed back, no-one seems to know yet. We’ll just have to wait and see what develops.
It will be interesting to see how the two largest megapixel camera phones will go head to head when they do finally reach us. We assume the specs could prove who wins in a photo-finish race, with the costs being secondary.
Both handsets are Quad-band EDGE devices with HSDPA, Wi-Fi and built-in GPS for location picture tagging. The two also boast nearly the same battery life, close to 9hrs talk time on 2.5G and five on 3G. Where the C905 has a 2.4-inch screen and the I8510 kicks it up a notch, with 2.8.
A deciding factor could be the attractive storage ceiling. Initially, Samsung are offering an 8GB version on those carriers mentioned above and there’s also 16GB on the horizon. This is compared to the Sony Ericsson phone which only offers a minuscule amount of onboard memory and a 2GB M2 card, which can be upgraded.
No official costing has been released yet by any of the networks, despite our frequent feverish INQuiries which fell on deaf ears to one of them. Orange though has kindly passed along that the usual animal tariffs will be expected with this phone.
Pocket-Lint picked up on how almost identical looking the Nokia N95 and the I8510 are in appearance, seen here. Are handset designers running out of ideas? Take a look and decide for yourself. µ
Its about time you started educating people that more megapixels does not equal better photographs! In fact, the opposite is true, given the tiny sensors used in mobile phones, we are well past the point where more pixels improves image quality. The pixels have become too small, which dramatically reduces sensitivity and increases noise. Yes, you have more pixels, but you have even far more pixels that are completely the wrong color :) This page explains it very well: http://6mpixel.org/en/ You dont want more pixels, more than anything, you want *larger sensors* (in mm²) and then better optics. Both of which are difficult in mobile phones.
The innov8 or i8510 is already on sale at e2save( 8 & 16gb versions)and mobiles.co.uk both part of the carphone empire and also available on ebay. Most of the reviews talk about it's excellent camera with an very good sensor sensor. Most people love to take pictures but its difficult to take music player, camera , laptop and mobile . This is where this phone builds up on the n95 success and beats nokia n96. It does not have dvb-h tv like n96 which is useless in uk at the moment. It also has Symbian S60 version 3 feature pack 2 which the sony ericsson and LG 8 megapixel phones lack. Samsung has really beaten Nokia by i8510 and locked Apple iphone and Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 by its unlocked & 5mp Windows mobile Omnia phone.
