Hijacked computer figures at shocking high

It's close to midnight... and something evil's lurking in the dark
Thursday, 4 September 2008, 12:48

INSECURITY EXPERTS SAY that not only did this summer see a ridiculous amount of rain – it also saw a surge in the amount of zombies.

That’s right, according to the Shadowserver Foundation (zombie trackers) the number of hijacked computers has increased threefold in the last three months.

The statistics from Shadowserver show that more than 450,000 computers are now part of zombie networks – this rise, it says, is linked to booby-trapped websites.

Shockingly – or not as the case may be – the vast majority of netbots run from PCs using a version of Microsoft Windows.

The figures show the increase from June this year, when the numbers were in the 100,000s now at over 450,000 at the end of August, the rise is obviously noticeable.

Shadowserver says that the rise in numbers goes along with a fall in the figure of command and control servers tracked by the group – this suggests that hi-tech criminals are concentrating their resources.

Recent months have seen this rise in individual zombie attacks, alongside web attacks designed to recruit new victims rather than using email to infect the virus.

So watch out people, zombies are about. µ

Clarification required please

"Shockingly – or not as the case may be – the vast majority of netbots run from PCs using a version of Microsoft Windows." Can you give more specific info on this point please ? - i'd like the figures on how many computers running a variant of linux were part of a botnet.

Number of Computers

How many computer are there on the internet? Lets say between 400m and 1billion... If you converted that to dollars, would you really care if you lost 450k? Probably not!
