OiNK shut down by British, Dutch police
TORRENT PRE-RELEASE music site OiNK has been shut down by British and Dutch coppers after a two year investigation.
The site, which was members-only and operated a strict invite and torrent seeding policy, was a hotspot for early album leaks - that is, promotional copies would be made available sometimes months before they were available in shops.
British music bodies the IFPI and the BPI must be chuffed with the closure: it's estimated that there were 180,000 users on the site, all wanting to get their mitts on free music. Allegedly, the site was operated and maintained by a 24-year-old Middlesbrough man who was arrested today.
There's also been a raid last week on the site's servers, now seized, which were hosted in Amsterdam.
Jeremy Banks of the IFPI's Internet Anti-Piracy unit wasted no time pointing out the evils of music piracy: "This was not a case of friends sharing music for pleasure," he said.
"This was a worldwide network that got hold of music they did not own the rights to and posted it online." Possibly for friends to share with each other, for pleasure. We reckon. µ

What do IFPI and the BPI suggest we do now? Move to the US and buy our music on amazon.com? Given that they can't come up with any alternatives it seems they're begging for a new illegal tracker. The music industry is still light years away from offering anything of similar service and quality.
Oh come on, I thought Inq was better than the rest of the sites when it comes to filtering crap from IFPI and other anti-piracy organisations. The website received donations only to pay for hosting the servers that ran the system. As a user, you did not have to pay for access and you were certainly not required to upload music. Once every few weeks, users that proved they share music with others by uploading what they've already downloaded (not necessarily illegal music, there was plenty of legal or public domain music on the website) would receive invitations which they could give to people they know. The access to the website was so hard because people were responsible for those who allow in and those people had to "tutor" their invitees. Stop spreading things that aren't true.
of time, money, resources, as it'll only be a matter of time before another "OiNK" hits the net. It's probably already out there to be honest...it's just a matter of finding it before these "police" do when instead they should be out worrying about REAL CRIMINALS!!!!
There goes my big fat Power User+ ratio!! Toughest ratio to build ever!! Damn... The best tracker for music dies. This is a sad, sad day. I'm about to cry... For real. :( Where am I supposed to get my music now? CDs are outrageously expensive and hard to find here in Brazil, no online music store at all, let alone a DRM-free one. I'm doomed.

This kind of basic ignorance certainly doesn't inspire confidence in any of their other utterances. What are the chances they've pulled a similar cockup on the charge sheet?

Regardless of the rights or wrongs of file-sharing, it will carry on without any visible reduction despite this closure. People will use the power of the internet creatively, with or without the co-operation of the old media industry. Their only option is to develop a cheap, open and flexible licensing model which accommodates this. So far they seem determined to die fighting.....
What actually does a take down involve? Should the users of OiNK with the "big fat Power User+ ratio" be worried their IP's/download history/etc are now in the hands of the police?

this is disgusting my 3 or 4 point ratio gone, words fail me on this. My best wishes to Oink, himself and all the other users and I have shared with. I do hope everyone moves onto a publick channel like the pirate bay and the whole of the internet is flooded with copys. Millions instead of the hundred thousand users, if that, on oink. Well, that sucks. Burger the feds who wasted their time attempting to stop piracy. OiNK will be back and there is nothing you can do about piracy. Get used to it and maybe even find out a way to make money off it. but QUIT wasting your money and our time!
..the spin they put on it as well in reports etc, telling people straight up inaccuracies about the site and its owners. If the investigation really had been 2 years long as they say, they would at least know how the site functions. That goes for the Police statements, and the reports whos job it is to inform the public. A poor report on web site that deserved more.
