CPU Scaling with an HD 4870X2
Daily Wibble Or the “how bad do Phenoms suck?” article
THE DENIZENS OF Legion Hardware have performed an exhaustive comparison of HD 4870 X2 scaling under several CPUs. Here you can see which games are capped by CPU and which games are capped by the GPU. Devil May Cry was the most GPU-dependent of the lot, while Company of Heroes was really churning out frames based on the CPU. Oh man, should we say how bad a performance the X4 Phenoms put out? Find out which CPU benefits your ATI card the most… right here.
Overclocker’s Club has one of the first 4870s with aftermarket coolers, the Powercolor HD 4870 PCS+ (that’s professional cooling system plus). Just for reference, Powercolor has actually discontinued all reference designs RV770s and are only making PCS and Play versions… Well, OCC got a decent overclock (+110MHz/+200MHz total) keeping the core temps between 53-55ºC. Apparently pricing is quite good at around USD $290, which makes it as cheap as the relative chip. There’s a 1GB version already out in case you’re wondering. Come get some.
I4U is waving its arms around in an attempt to review the GoLive2 Stix 200 PC game controller. The Stix 200 is a Wii-mote-alike controller that does the job in 2D and 3D games (although this is the 2D version under review). USB-based, the device needs to iron out some wrinkles before it is ready for the primetime; still, it’s the thought that counts… Shane wasn’t very impressed, but it’s a beginning. Get it here.
Hanns-G isn’t your top-of-the-range LCD maker, far from it, but they do come up with some unusual/uniquely-priced solutions that deserve some attention, like this Hanns-G 28-inch LCD at Thru sting Reviews. Ardjuna found this 28-incher (27.5 to be exact) to do very much the same as its 24-inch brethren, but at a better price (£260). Makes you want to go off and buy one just for the heck of it.
Since Zotac has entered the mobo market, some (few) sites have been able to score the brand’s product. Silent PC Review, considering it’s “theme”, landed a Zotac NF610i-ITX motherboard. Mini-ITX as it is, it allows you to stick an amazing amount of processing power on a tiny footprint. It’s based on the GeForce 7050 which, according to Mike, does its part in HD video, but “where’s the HDMI/DVI?” he asks. There’s an NF630i out there somewhere, with DVI. But this is what SPCR has.
ATI’s top graphics card, the HD 4870 is popping up with several new bits and pieces of hardware attached to it – usually of the cooling kind. Well, Tech Power Up has a Palit HD 4870 Sonic Dual Edition on the bench today. This card comes mildly overclocked out of the box, clocking in at 775MHz/1000MHz (that’s GDDR5… btw). The Sonic Dual gets its name from the custom dual-slot heatsink, which implements two cooling fans sitting atop the aluminium fins. The card doesn’t pump air out the back, unfortunately, instead the DVI connectors occupy the top half of the bracket and the HDMI and Displayport connectors the bottom half. Choices. You’ve also got the most thorough test on an HD 4870 we’ve seen in a while… 15 different games plus the 3D Mark family. We’re talking too much… find out for yourself. µ

Phenoms suck???
Following your link, the second placed bench was a Phenom X4. With a lower clock than the Intel quad below it. How is this 'sucking' ?I Can't Understand
How you think a Phenon 9950 in 2nd place is rubbish my brother has 1 and apart from the fact VISTA is on it and hes using a 8400GS Turbo Cache card its ok. On XP Pro it would be the bomb but how you rate it as it's suck is beyound me obviously a serious INTEL fan.It appears they do...
@ danThe link is to the Devil May Cry results which as mentioned are limited by GPU.
Look at the CPU limited results on the Company of Heroes page...
Well dan...
Good that you discovered. Paul Taylor has been taking constant jabs at DAAMIT since god knows when. Looks like after the 4870X2 somebody got really sour inside. You know what? Paul, we can see through all that BS so cut it.
lol
A 1000usd cpu vs a 200usd CPU.AMD looked good in this.
Phenoms..
I wouldnt buy a Phenom to play games with. But thats just me. Theyre great for other things, you know?4.5x price, 2.5x perf: Intel wins.
for GAMERS, that is.Core 2 Quad Q9650 = 183 points = $825 median
Phenom X4 9950 = 72 points = $195 median

Nehalem sinks AMD even deeper.
How's At DAAMIT?

Ok. Who Wants To Be A Hero?
what Paul was pointing out
"Interestingly pairing the Radeon HD 4870 X2 with an AMD Phenom X4 processor produced very poor results when testing with Company of Heroes. Incredibly the Phenom X4 9950 overclocked to 3.00GHz was unable to match the performance of the Core 2 Duo E6320 when under clocked to just 1.60GHz, which we found hard to believe. However after countless re-testing of these processors using various drivers and motherboards, these were the best results that we came up with. The Phenom X4 9950 was 40% faster than the Phenom X4 9150e, rendering 19fps more at 1920x1200. "http://www.legionhardware.com/document.php?id=770&p=2
COH is broken
if you look at supreme commander you see the phenoms up there with the best Intels. And SC is far greater strain on the CPU compared to COD.COD doesn't recognise the extra cores on the AMD processors which is clear by the big jump for Intel Duel cores to quads, but no similar jump in Amd duel to quads.
Morel of the story relic cant program for AMD processors making this bench mark biased.
Fake
If you think 200x13= 2,8Ghz, ur wrong, aswell as 200x14 is not 3,0. This whole review is BS, I own Windsor 5600+ X2, and its never ever slower than C2D E6320. I have compared it with Intel, and its somewhere between E6400 and E6600. Idk what they always do wrong, but iv got it stable on 3,33Ghz on ASUS M2R32-MVP.Huh???
how is even a close comparison. does anyone notice they are using ddr2 1066 with the phenom and ddr3 1600 with the Core2 Quad..... cmon how are u gonna test 2 things on completely differant playing fields.
