A HIGH RESOLUTION satellite which will be used by Google Earth and others has been launched into orbit from Vandenberg Air Force Base on the Central California coast
The Delta 2 rocket carrying the GeoEye-1 satellite lifted off at 11:50 am Saturday.
it cost more than $500 million to build and launch the satellite which will orbit 423 miles up and circle the Earth more than a dozen times a day.
In black-and-white mode, the satellite can distinguish objects on the Earth's surface as small as 16 inches.
One of the biggest customers is Google which will use the data for its Google Earth mapping project. µ

Sure, with "miles" and "inches" into the hi-res space age. Oh, dear.I am wondering if the hi-res satellite will find the parts of Italy and other areas of occupied Europe which have mysteriously vanished?
